I have a question. Wouldn't it be easier if each hybridizer used a name to
register their Iris with so that everyone would know exactly who bred that
iris?
I know that people are always asking "who bred that?", so I was wondering
why a system similar to that used by dog breeders isn't used. For example: I
have two "kennel" names or "prefix's". One for my Silkys and one for my
Skyes. Every Skye puppy is registered using "Idrigill" in it's name. Such
as: Idrigill Boys Will Be Boys, or Idrigill Castles In The Skye. This prefix
identifies the dog as bred by me. If each hybridizer took out a registered
name through the Iris Society, so that name could only be used by them, then
wouldn't it make it easier for fellow hybridizers or other enthusiasts to
follow breeding programs and pedigree lines?
Well for one reason, the International Code of Nomenclature used to allow only 3 words in a name, but was recently updated to allow 4 . (AIS is the governing body for iris registrations and adheres tot he ISN). AIS will allow four words as of 12/1/2004. Another reason is that there is a limit of 30 characters (not counting spaces) per name.
