I would think the books like the Harry Potter, the Robert Jordan endless
series Wheel of Time (The Eye of the World and so far eight subsequent
follow-ups and one prequel) and the LeGuin books on Earthsea now about to
come out as a mini-series on TV would be goldmines of imaginative names and
possibilities rarely thought of for exploration.
I have noted one other source--Betty Wilkerson, I think, is touching upon--the
Stargate original movie and now eight seasons of TV episodes. All of these
are wonderfully written and scripted sources. I'm just waiting for "Naquita"
or "Jaffa, Krie" to appear.
Another source that is perhaps underused might be the verbally rich plays and
sonnets of Shakespeare. There've been a number--but the reservoir of
potential is wide and deep. The "four word" rule opens up a lot
possibilities.
I used to keep a notepad near at hand when I read--but oddly never used a
single one of the names thus found.
Mike Lowe commented on my "ecclesiastical music" names like Sanctus, Descant
and Cremona, the latter two ones I may want to transfer to modern sorts, as
neither was distributed or introduced.
Names make quite a difference in sales, I suspect. A well-named iris on which
the name has a good "fit" are really worth while commercially. There have
been some wonderfully imaginative uses by some of our breeders.
I spent a lot of time and sweat over coming up with the "right" names.
Sometimes I made references that didn't jog the memory where I expected it
to--"Joyful Noise" as a quote from the psalms. Tell objected--suggested "Loud
Music" as an alternative--which he subsequently used himself, along with
"Louder Still." Frankly, I liked mine better. It had wonderful associations
for me--as an encouragement for song, "Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord..."
I made a lot of noise in those days. The snappy and exhuberant BB on which I
pegged it certainly had the jump up and vivid qualities the name suggested.
It's a lot easier when irises just sort of name themselves. One look and
something jumps out--and isn't already used. Joe Ghio has had a lot of very
well named introductions, including such names as Frosted Starlight, Mystique
and Romantic Evening.
