Re: AIS: REF: AIS as International Registration Authority

Robert, I sure hope that I did not give the impression that I support the idea of submitting herbaceous specimens along with registration. I definitely do not support such an idea for irises. Rather, the specimens I reference are actually photographic representations of the herbaceous specimen. This would be in the form of a color slide, picture, or digital image.

I would also prefer that the picture/image only come from the hybridizer/registrant of the cultivar (this is if AIS adds picture/image submission as part of cultivar registration). Likewise, the written description of the cultivar's characteristics should be those observed in the hybridizer's garden. We all know that the same cultivar will grow and display differently in various cultural environments.

Also, if AIS moves forward with such a proposal, I would not encourage trying to play catch-up with previous registrations. Just treat the picture/image requirement as any other amended registration rule. If the image was not required for registration prior to 2006, then do not add pictures from various sources to the registration database for pre-2006 cultivars.

This whole discussion might actually need to be divided into two separate topics. One discussing pictures along with registration through AIS. The other discussing sections or individuals creating mass image collections of irises. In the later case, I would definitely support the notion of acquiring images of older cultivars and I would accept pictures from various sources and not limited to just the hybridizer.

If AIS starts requiring images for registration then that basically covers all future registrations. Then the previous registrations can be collected by the sections or individuals for a different image archive. This way you do not have two different groups doing the same thing simultaneously.

As far as archival existence I do not feel anything special needs to be considered. We do not need archival vaults like the Vatican. Any slides or pictures will go into the society's regular archive and when they deteriorate, then they are simply gone. The electronic images should last quite a bit longer as I outlined in my previous letter today.

Bobby introduces an interesting idea of voucher specimens. We now have herbarium specimens over 300 years old. This is definitely a great archive. Unfortunately here are a number of downsides. First, Iris make terrible herbarium specimens. Within a rather short time all colors turn brown and one would be hard pressed to distinguish a yellow iris from a purple. Of course todays herbarium specimens are usually supported by color photos attached. But another serious problem arises. Even though there is a lot of lip service for preserving cultivated plants very few herbaria wish to devote space to anything but wild collected specimens. Iris are not patented or trademarked (it has only happened once). Of course if the AIS would donate a million dollars to an addition to a herbarium they might reconsider. Unfortunately there are lots of rules that are created with no support in resources. We all know about unfunded mandates. They allow the federal government to say they did somet!

actually nothing ever really happened, but they did pass a law. The ICNCP I dont believe has funding to offer. It is much more important that ideas be discussed in forums like this. Perhaps some individuals will be inspired and volunteer, or take pictures, or support projects just by showing enthusiasm for them.
