Thank you, Tom. I"ll take a good look at the photos at Iris-species.
Your patience and persistence is appreciated....6-8 seeds per pod is not
surprising. The difference in the karyotypes (for those unfamiliar with the
term--refers to a lineup of the chromosomes of a species and is a picture of
sorts of the shapes--morphology--of the chromosomes) is sufficient to imply a
lot of both similarity and difference in the sequences on the DNA strands.
When those don't match reasonably well, fertility is limited in the first
generation.
Advanced generation hybrids, on the other hand, tend to have had things sorted
out and begin to act more normally, showing increased fertility, as those
chromosome segments shared in common are conserved, those that are not shared
tend to settle in as from one ancestor or the other.
Your efforts with these little ones can lead to some very good things!
