Re: CULT: How do you feel about interspersing other plants in your iris beds?

I would be interested in knowing from you all if you plant other annuals or

iris, period.

Mike,

In my experience irises (particularly the bearded types) perform best and are most easily managed in pure cultures withouy other plants interspersed.

However, I do plant some irises in mixed beds for the sake of a more varied and pleasing overall appearance, and as a sort of compromise, I have planted a long narrow bed along a fence line that is mostly in irises with a few true lilies, daylilies, and oriental poppies interspersed. For the past two years I have had wild sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) planted as a background. In late summer I sowed seed from old-fashioned hollyhocks in this position (it is possible that I may live to regret this).

My apologies for double-posting my previous message. I guess that I have not fully mastered this new email program yet.
