Mike,
In my experience irises (particularly the bearded types) perform best and are most easily managed in pure cultures withouy other plants interspersed.
However, I do plant some irises in mixed beds for the sake of a more varied and pleasing overall appearance, and as a sort of compromise, I have planted a long narrow bed along a fence line that is mostly in irises with a few true lilies, daylilies, and oriental poppies interspersed. For the past two years I have had wild sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) planted as a background. In late summer I sowed seed from old-fashioned hollyhocks in this position (it is possible that I may live to regret this).
