Re: CULT: iris companion plants

Donald refers to "unwelcome guests." I find that delightful!

"Weeds" and "Unwelcome guests" are very different ideas--the latter term
giving honor to the identity and creation of these unique plants--and
animals--for which we have no plan, and which disturb our intentions.

Some of those "guests" are extraordinarily beautiful in their own right. I
grub them out with vigor, but still enjoy their unique qualities.

Then I am reminded that *I. pseudacorus" and *I. missouriensis* are considered
noxious "guests" in irrigation ditches, natural waterways for the former and
Oregon mountain pastureland for the latter.

There's a place for "guests" in the world, just not in my iris rows--even if
they do grow much better than the iris themselves. Maybe one of these days
I'll devote an entire area of the garden to the guests.....and enjoy them.
