<LOL>
Well, I guess there are <some> advantages to being in the vale... <g>
You are the second person to think this is a labor intensive project,
but relative to building a greenhouse or burying heating coils, labor
seems relatively minor to me.
The horse isn't potty trained, so he keeps leaving neat little piles of
poop on the driveway for me to remove. I use a big lightweight plastic
snow sled to drag things around. The 45 gallon tub isn't very big, so
was able to drag it to the horse poop, then back to the sunny spot in
the garden half full of manure in one trip. Horse poop is easier to
gather than cow flop! I added half a bag of leftover alfalfa pellets
that was sitting around. Did <not> mix. Added water. Dragged four
bales of old dusty smelly hay, no longer fit to eat, from the barn on
the trusty sled, turned them on edge and tied them around the tub.
The half rounds of fencing are scattered all over the place - I use them
routinely with Reemay for erratic late spring/early fall freeze
protection on irises and early starting of veggies.
So it was just a matter of gathering up the parts.
To prolong heat production, I don't plan to mix the compost. Anaerobic
instead of aerobic decomp.
The only smell it generates so far is the sweet smell of wet alfalfa
(wet mowed grass).
Am waiting for a return call from the agriculture extension folks -
maybe they will have some idea of how long I can keep this cooking. I
like the idea of adding more fuel to the pile as time goes on.
