HYB:REB:Theory

There are many theory about the path to rebloom.

People who live in CA and Australia, some other areas too, just mark the
irises that rebloom for them and then cross those irises. Sometimes, rebloom
even comes to those that don't want it! <no names here><vbg>

As stated before, these irises, beautiful though they are, rarely rebloom
for me in zone 6. Heck, even some zone 4-6 rebloomers don't bloom for me. If
I were JUST a grower I'd be dissatisfied. As a breeder I'm frustrated.

The Australian and CA breeders can't breed rebloomers for me. (By breeding
rebloomers for them) They don't know what will rebloom in zones other than
their own until they get reports from other zones. By the time rebloom can be
reported with regularity a cultivar has been in existence for 10-15 years.

I have many theories. One theory is to use irises that rebloom early in
zones 4 & 5. These should, in theory, provide earlier rebloom everywhere.
Also, I've listed the irises that have bloomed July & August here. Reported
earlier. These should also bloom early in most places. In theory! Lets call it
an educated guess!

The theory I've been working on since I came out here (3 years) is the zone
8 & 9 rebloomers X zone 4-6 rebloomers. As I started my Excel sheets for
2006, this was my main focus, limited by the irises available to me. Then, I
realized this would be a bit light on rebloom. A year with no rebloom?
Horrors! And, what about combining genes on the Wilkerson introductions and
seedlings?

As a result I made way to many crosses, and they were varied.
