Theoretically, if one were to rescue an iris from such an abusive situation - potting should work well, though being a sturdy historic it would probably make it if planted straight into the ground.
A few years ago some irises were shipped from the south- where the ground doesn't freeze- to me in January- where the ground was most decidedly frozen. They were shipped with soil and wrapped a bit so the roots did not dry out. These remained potted until there was a thaw and I could get a shovel deep enough to make hole to set them out- probably mid March. Amazingly enough all three cultivars actually bloomed that spring, on short stalks to be sure, but enough that there was pollen available.
While they were potted, they were kept in the garage- very cold- well below freezing, and a little light through the windows. If there was a protected place that the pot could be placed outside, that may work the best. Repeated spraying for aphids is fairly effective, but the irises do not enjoy the spray either.
