Anner,
Well, I could be growing them wrong too. I am a newbie after all. so there too! (as my granma always used to say) lol.
Yes, I believe the communion cups are about an ounce, but they are a bit more rigid than it sounds like you're thinking. Think of the plastic cups that splinter when you crush them.
They are quite clear, I can see the soil from top to bottom. I'm not using heat, so I'm pretty sure they dry from the top down, but I water them when they look dry. That's working out to about twice a week.
I tried the vermiculite last year and was dissatisfied. If it wasn't floating and washing away it was getting all glommy and packed. Last year I had gemination end Oct. to Dec and not much after that so 'sterile' would have been the same as dead. Might be worth another look.
Most of my surviving babies have passed the third leaf and are doing that elongating leaf thing. I can see the roots on some of them and the roots appear better overall than the ones I lined out this past spring.
lol, no angst though, just spread the pollen again next year, er rather the year after that.

These communion cups of which you have spoken: Are those the little shot
glass type of things the dentist uses to serve one mouthwash? Flexible plastic,
about an ounce, give or take? Something similar? So you are putting a hole in
the bottom and transplanting into these? Likewise, be mindful that it is possible to get a bad batch of potting soil.
I like vermiculite for sowing seeds because even though one has to
transplant them comparatively soon, there is no problem with waterlogging, or with
damping off. No soil means no soil pathogens.
If you eliminate all the places where culture can fail, and they still die,
don't angst about it.
Cordially,
