Splinter? How are you getting a drainae hole into those? You aren't  melting 
it with a piece of wire or something, are you? You can gas yourself  that way. 
I forget exactly which foul effluvium floats off burning  plastic, but some 
of it can be downright toxic.

In my estimation it is only really suitable for seed which you expect  to 
germinate within the month and be ready to move up in about six weeks  or so. In 
other words, stuff that is all set to go. It does  take some special attention 
to manage, but some of the annoyances  can be resolved by placing a piece of 
plastic window screening in the  container before filling so that the medium 
won't flow out of the  drainage holes. You need medium grade horticultural 
vermiculite, too, not the  finer stuff. 
 
That said, I am not sure that is enough root run for those  seedlings. I feel 
you should not keep them in those cups overlong.
