OT-CHAT: totally off topic - whooping cranes

Got a note offlist asking about this year's baby cranes, & knowing several of you are interested, but not keeping up with the daily saga, thought I'd post an update:

Weather has <not> cooperated this year! They've been stuck with unfavorable winds several times, only made it to Cumberland County, Tennessee a week or so ago.

Weather forecast meant they would be stuck there for at least another week, so most of the humans decided to take some time off to spend Christmas with their families. A couple of volunteers stayed behind to frolic out in the cow pies and ponds during the day with the babies.

The pilots and rest of the team will come back on Dec 29, and try again to get over the "beast" (Walden's Ridge) to get to the major crane staging area at Hiwassee Refuge (about an hour south of here). Once they get to Hiwassee, historically, it's been a quick and easy flight south to their intended wintering grounds in Florida.
