There are three clumps of various ages of the "original" MATRIX, only one clump of the "new" MATRIX. The "new" MATRIX is withing 15 ft of two clumps of the "old" MATRIX, same soil (as much as possible here), treatment, exposure etc.
Clumps are kept in relatively rapid growth mode by thinning for our club June sales either every year for the rapid growing ones, or every other year for the slower ones.
Less work than digging and dividing every 2 or 3 years as is needed for a commercial garden.
I will pull a few starts from both sources and plant across the creek where soil is more uniform. I wasn't surprised by differences the first year, but have been by continued, consistent difference. Which is why I asked if anybody had seen this kind of "behavior" before.
My guess is like the rest of you - it's just a fluke of history and growth.
Yes, Mary Lou, I missed you! Sorry to hear the variegata is regressing. It has some potential, but growth habit definitely needs work. Wish I could infuse it with some of the DOCTOR ALAN X KIWI CHEESECAKE seedling enthusiasm.
