Mike and Loic: Different additions of the Judges handbook vasillate between 8
and 10 inches. For years many MDB hybridizers have argued that staying under 8
inches is too high a bar to jump over. Currently I believe the measure is
supposed to be 8 inches. A good judge must take into account that weather can
effect height. Of course if a plant is more consistant it is desirable. But I
have never seen one that did not vary to some degree. I have even had good
MDBs that in a strange year could be MTB size. One must remember that these
rules are created arbitrarily and do not reflect nature but what man tries to
impose on nature. I cringe whenever I see a judge going around with a ruler.
With experience one should be able to recognize each class without splitting
hairs. The goal is good garden plants that one can reccommend for certain
spots in the garden not plants that do math. If all parameters come together
in a very pleasing way the measure of any parameter is less relevant. As Dave
said if it looks like a duck then its a duck. This reflects a argument that
has been ongoing in taxonomy with the rize of numerical taxonomy and now
cladistics. You may create sophisticated measures but they can become so
arcane they no longer work for the average person.
