The Dwarf Iris Portfolios were put out once a year for many years by Walter Welch. Later one or two were put out by Eric Tankesley Clark. The early ones were mimeographed. They contained a lot of information about crossing Iris species. Because Walter put them out year after year a lot of information was duplicated over and over. At the time, Iris suaveolens was called Iris mellita and I. rubromarginata. The yearbooks are interesting historically. Some of the information was current thinking at the time but has changed. Somewhere in my garage i have a complete set, if mice have not gotten to them. I believe they would make some great set of articles for the Dwarf Newsletter if annotated with current knowledge and the DIS will probably do that someday. The idea of a Yearbook I think is a good idea and if we could build our DIS membership large enough we might be able to go back to printing yearbook. Today's version could be wonderful with pictures compared to the old mimeogra! phed originals. ----- Original Message ----- Trying to clear up some of the mess on the sunporch getting ready for this winter's sprouting iris seeds, I discovered a big stack of the Dwarf Iris Portfolio publications from the 60s and 70s given to me by Jim Ennenga a few years ago. The publication on the top of the stack is a dwarf checklist, and I had assumed the rest were also, but they are not. They contain all kinds of interesting articles. The ones that caught my eye are about experiments with different dwarf species, speculations about inheritance of pigments etc. Are these articles summarized or published elsewhere? I plan to skim thru them, see if there's anything there I want to keep, but plan to donate the rest of them somewhere. Where do the 'portfolios' fit into the world of publications about dwarf irises?
