Haft markings are considered an interruption of the basic color presentation
of the iris. Some people will like them, just as some people like Rembrandt
tulips or Appaloosa horses. Others will try to avoid interruptive markings.
Some people like Space-Age irises, others do not. Some people like the
broken-color factor, (Purple Streaker etc.) and some do not. A judge must
do his best not to let personal preferences hold too tight a rein on his
decisions. Even color preferences must be held at bay, if possible. Many
of us have been striving for decades to get rid of the haft markings on the
hafts of recessive amoenas. Barry Blyth probably is the most successful in
this field; I grow many of his things, even though, as discussed earlier this
month, many of them do not do well in Eastern mid-Atlantic states. Lloyd
