Permanent pen for small labels

Julie Allen asked in a message dated December 16
about a marking pen for use on the size labels
commonly used inside pots or flats.

I use a pen made by PILOT, titled Ultrafine
Razor Point, permanent marker. The ink lasts
longer than the plastic tag (at least three seasons
in full California intensity sun). This works
great on the 5/8" wide, 5-1/4" long plastic labels
I use in pots. I keep hoping that Pilot will come
out with a broader tipped version for use on
larger labels.

I agree that Sharpie is not permanent in the garden -
at best the ink lasts half of a growing season on the
parts of the tag exposed to sun. However, I have used
Sharpie to mark toes and the writing was still
legible the end of the next growing season when the
rhizome was dug. The writing was covered by soil the
entire growing season however.
