Before the advent of methyl bromide, tobacco beds were sterilized with fire -
requires knowlegeable stacking of brush to get a good hot fire that will heat
the soil enough to kill weed seeds and pathogens.  Probably not a good
subdivision activity.  Most of the brush piles I saw had at least one old
tire to help get the fire going well.  Beds were always burned in February,
right before planting.
