I have been observing these and note that some have retained color and
leaf integrity while some others seem to have died back completely.

Is the dieback a sign that the transplants didn't "take"?

Where do you garden, Jane?  You've said, but I have forgotten.

The dieback could suggest the rhizomes didn't take, or it could be that 
they froze and are dorment now, depending on where you are located.
