There was a long thread on this subject just a few months ago. I believe
the conclusion was that only the most expensive digital cameras can compare
with modestly priced 35 mm SLRs (with tens of millions of pixels as
compared to at best a few thousand for the digitals). Anyhow, a search of
the archives should reveal all.
