Dear Iris list,
I should stop lurking and introduce myself. My name is Pete McGrath and =
I live in Albuquerque New Mexico. I have been reading the postings =
since Thanksgiving.
My real passion within the iris world is arils and arilbreds. I grow =
quite a few. I am past president of the Aril Society International and =
am presently vice president of same.
I have been gardening for 30 years and serious about irises for almost =
10 of those.
I wanted to jump in a few times but felt it wrong without at least =
introducing myself.
As for lighting, the new rage seems to be the metal halide lighting =
setups. I run two of them side by side and I could just about grow a =
patch of corn under them. They have a seperate ballast and are a single =
bulb (150w - 1000w) in a hood reflector.
I found that seedlings got too leggy and spindly under flourescent =
lights, even with the gro-lux type of bulbs. I kept my lights within an =
inch or two of the plants and still had this problem. Ever since going =
to this new system (one 400w metal halide and one 400w full spectrum =
daylight bulb) I have had very happy seedlings. I now keep the lights =
about 2 feet from the plants. I am about to pull them out from their =
summer dormancy in the garage as seeds are beginning to germinate in =
their baggies.
The lights are about $150.00 each but are so superior to flourescent =
that I had to blurt out my nickel's worth.
Blessed Holidays to all,
Pete McGrath
In Albuquerque
Snow all day
