Merry Christmas

                                        MERRY CHRISTMAS

merry christmas said the man
his eyes did brightly glisten
his cheery face was filled with mirth
his heart was full this christian.

merry christmas mumbled i
in an automatic response
and paused in midst of hurried stride
and cursed my cynic pretence

i began to think of christmas past
and the joy that was this season
my mind was full of many things
of kids, of trees, not reason

the whispered tones as parcels gay
were placed beneath the tree
their simple and yet loving gifts
they shared with you and me

the christmas morns, when sleep was gone
the shouts, the noise the living
i know that's what i'll miss this year
but time is unforgiving.

and i watched the people hurry by
arms full of christmas giving
the food, the gifts, the wine, the care
their special day was nearing

i saw the children wide of eye
entranced by each store window
a thousand dreams must fill their minds
hearts full of joy, not sorrow

the love that children feel all year
requires no special season
is the magic we adults create
done for suspect reason

is one day a year enough to show
that we should love each other
do i require a calendar to say
that i should love my brother
             or
is christmas then a state of mind
and can our children teach us
that we need christmas more than they
so that the love of man may reach us
