Well, Dave, good luck! :)
It helps if you know people who have similar growing conditions near you
and who are also experimenting to go look at what does well for them.
Reading pedigrees helps (looking for relatives of irises that you
already have that do well), but there is a lot of trial and error
involved, especially if your garden conditions or the way you prefer
gardening with irises isn't ideal. And as you've observed, the AIS
award winners aren't necessarily the ones that will do best for you.
Find suppliers who have top quality but not the newest introductions - 5
or more years after introduction, the price drops considerably. Find
folks who are also interested in good growers in your region and offer
to swap with them.
