Re: HYB: question - slow growth?

Dear Linda,

You have not mentioned how much light the seedlings get.  It might be that if they are getting 6 hours a day, you might increase it to 7 or 8 in order to stimulate growth.

Also, you have not mentioned what type of medium you have in the pots the irises are growing in.  Perhaps it lacks the proper nutrients.  Perhaps a shot of an all-purpose fertilizer might boost the seedling's growth as well.  Please check with someone in your area when the right time for fertilizing irises are. (Remember...if you use Miracle Grow on irises, it is good to follow the amount of liquid fertilizer with the same amount of plain water once the fertilizer has soaked in.)

If the above mentioned ideas are not applicable to your situation, then try playing dance music for the irises and touching them daily.  Also, talk to your irises...they might respond to it favorably.

Subject: [iris-talk] HYB: question - slow growth?

A couple? three? years ago, some TB seeds were given to me that
germinated well but are the sorriest slowpoke growing plants I have ever
seen.  The surviving plants seem quite healthy but the rhizomes are
still TINY - most 1/4" or less.  I moved them out of the seedflats where
I start everything into small pots this fall and am going to set them
out (not in the gravel field) to see if that will make them do
something.

Does anybody have any thoughts on why these things are growing so
slowly?  Is there a 'slow growth' gene pool out there?  Most of these
have a lot of Blyth ancestry, if that's a clue.
