Maybe it is the triumph of enthusiasm and ignorance over theory.

Maybe you imported some disease and cootie problems into the garden with new 
rhizomes.

Of course, if you were growing proven acclimated oldies possibly received as 
passalongs and got more into other things, that might have something to do 
with it. 

Kramb's garden is an interesting apparent anomaly, though. No question of 
that.
