What Vince Lewonski has said about MING DYNASTY is
certainly true
(virus makes spots in the falls, often penalized ad
shows) but I have
also heard judges say, "Oh, MD, of course it has the
spots. But no
penalty to the exhibitor because it's always that way,
inherent in the
plant." I have seen it with and without the spots,
and personally I
think it is more striking and attractive with them. I
think there are
a couple other varieties that have the same viral
affliction (if it
really is an affliction) but for the life of me I
can't recall just now
what those might be, even though I have seen at least
one of them
someplace. Meanwhile, I continue to grow MD, spots or
not, and would
not want to part with it.

Arnold, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I love Ming
Dynasty "with spots". I wouldn't have it any other
way, because then it's just another golden yellow of
which there are multitudes. It is distinctive and
reliable and it's one of those few Iris that I can
pick out the moment I see it with its spots. I
believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and
if a virus enhances the beauty of a plant then more
power to it. Where would the plant world be without
Rembrandt Tulips?

I do show Iris and I have one hybrid that I plan to
introduce in the next year or two, but I will never be
a judge. I have made place in my gardens for some
iris that would never stand up to the rigid
expectations for shows, but they have such beautiful
flowers that I cannot part with them. I don't believe
that God ever made anything "ugly". It's all in the
perspective.
