The Iris Chronicles were compiled by the members of the AIS Historic Iris
Robin in the 1960s. They were rescued from oblivion by HIPS and have been
available, to my knowledge, at least since 1993 as a HIPS Sales Publication.
The Chronicles typically fall into four categories: most concern a single
hybridizer (Millet, Sturtevant, Hall, Bliss, Williamson, Foster) some concern
a pair or group of related hybridizers (Sass, Cayeux, W. and K. Dykes , G&K,
Vilmorin), some are themed (Iris in Medicine, History of Iris, Poems and
Songs for Iris Lovers), a couple treat of one iris (Florentina, Albicans),
and one is a distinguished scientific document, that is Marc. Simonet's
doctoral dissertation on his seminal cytological experiments, translated by
Bee Warburton and available in two volumes.
The Chronicles are made available in photocopied facsimiles of the original
typewritten documents and they vary widely in quality. A couple are
incomplete. A couple have areas that are hard to read. A couple seem to have
been originally compiled by people who were not as driven as others. The
question arose early as to whether HIPS should retype these and the
overwhelming consensus was that the original documents themselves should be
made available, complete with lacunae, scribbled marginalia, and errors. The
Sass Chronicle was of necessity the exception to the rule, and was retyped,
as was the Simonet translation.
The typical Chronicle contains information gleaned from divers sources: old
issues of the AIS Bulletin, catalog descriptions of introductions,
biographical and bibliographical information, family reminiscences where
available, notes on hybridizing goals and methods, articles from non-Society
publications, etc. It is, in other words, a rich compilation of important
primary materials of interest to the student of the subject of that
Chronicle.
A list of the available Historical Chronicles will be found on the HIPS page
at <http://www.worldiris.com> under HIPS Sales Items. HIPS Publications
Director Dorothy Stiefel can provide additional information about individual
Chronicles and she may be contacted at <Irisacher@aol.com.>
I can tell you that the preliminary concept for the new AIS Chronicles is
under development at this time. A committee has been appointed to brainstorm
on the possibilities and practicalities associated with any such detailed and
long term project
