PCN: Hardiness in Aus

From: "Jan Clark" <janclarx@hotmail.com>

Hi Arthur, and others,
I have been following this thread with interest from across the seas.
I am still 'getting to know' PCI's (PCI's Linda, because they are not the
original native species, they are hybrids, but I used the Politically
correct heading anyhow)
Some of mine have fared badly through this humid summer we are having, and I
have been at a loss whether to water or not. My Ghio seedlings are doing
well under their tree, with just the odd splash of H2O. The plants that
flowered last spring are looking very sad. Friend in Melbourne who grows
them, advised me not to water in the evenings, if they were getting the
evening sun. Well that's exactly what I had been doing. I've been watering
in the early mornings since then, but I am yet to move them to the South
East side of the house, where I feel they will do better (South being the
NON sunny side). Those in the garden, with infrequent waterings, seem to be
doing well - no die back, or summer dormancy.
As for cold - It only gets down to -5 celcius, so no problem.
The humidity has not been kind to my TB's this year either, and I've had
more than my share of crown rot. Oh well - only 6 more weeks of hot weather
to go.
Cheers, Jan Clark
