I can recommend some of the smaller white/green variegated trailing
euonymous. I don't have them in with the irises per se, but they are across
the walk in the perennial border and it is such a small garden that it is
really all of one piece visually. The variegated foliage picks up the cool
tones in the bearded iris foliage and adds snap. I'd avoid any with
yellow/green variegation since that can get right edgy, but the white/green
is very nice and they aren't much bother to keep clipped. Mine are low mounds
about eighteen inches or so across and about a foot tall. I just trim off the
trailing bits when I'm in there weeding. You can also get some good short
shrub effects with some of the herbs when they are kept well clipped.
Germander for one. Looks like box if pinched back heavily and often and costs
a whole lot less, especially if you are trying to get a lot of edging in
place. And some of the shrubbier hypericums are good. The attractive blooms
are a rather strident yellow that you have to be careful with, but the plants
are very handsome and the olde folkloric guys and herbalists say that they
will repel evil forces if planted near the door to the house. I wish they did
a similar number on the slugs, but that does not seem to be the case.

In any case, do consider something variegated. It really cuts the monotony.
