It's not unusual for me to see 19 or 20 deer strolling down between me
and my back yard neighbour in broad daylight on the other side of our
electric fence. Even with the fence they occasionally come in or up the
driveway and while they don't decimate the irises, they will nip off the
expanding bud of the TB or Siberian you've been waiting three years to
see bloom and spit it out at the base of the plant. They will also eat
some Siberian foliage if it's tender and they are quite willing to eat a
fair amount of bearded iris foliage before they move on to something
they like better.. While they're at it they'll walk all over
everything. If you have newly planted rhizomes you can count on having
one end stepped on so that it's now growing at 6-8 inches deep.
Bottom line? fence!
