Re: AIS:Judge Types Over the Years

Walter: I appreciate the historical information regarding the different classifications of judges. It has always been a mystery to me, though, why the term "garden judge" doesn't mean just that and why there is no "exhibition judge" category for those who do the judging at shows. Most of the judging of which I know comes at the shows, not in gardens. In fact, other than judges' training sessions at regional conventions, I have never seen any official judging being done in gardens. Of course, hybridizers have to judge whether they wish to introduce, based on the criteria for what is a fine and worthy iris, but we are always told that stalks on the show bench are to be judged according to how well the grower has grown and groomed the stalk, not on how good the variety itself is in comparison to the others. If that is so, it seems to me there should either be a different category of judge or the name "garden judge" should be changed because it is not accurate. I'm not a judge myself, but it seems to me that one doesn't have to be wholly qualified in the garden in order to judge the show in a worthy manner, though the garden qualifications may very well be valuable.
