I have been making some major changes in how we purchase iris for the
planting and what we keep. Prior to me taking over we would send a hybridizer
an amount of money and he would send us iris of his choosing. I am changing
that policy because the last three years we never had the DYKES MEDAL WINNER
prior to it winning in the garden. I am implementing a program where I ask
3-4 other knowledgeable iris people in the club to help give me with names of
iris they have seen while visiting gardens, conventions and etc. The iris
planting is at the old entrance and now is called the Alice Goodman Iris
Garden. We now have approximately 700 iris of all types except for arils. We
used to have an aril bed but I removed it because of water drainage problems.
Water would cut right across the bed and we would lose all but one or two due
to this problem every year. I am hoping this can be taken care of soon. But
TB's are our major iris on display.

I'm always on lookout for an exceptional iris so if anyone sees one that they
feel has to be on display because it's so exceptional feel free to let me
know. We do have lots of judges stop by the planting every year as well as
20,000 people each weekend during the iris bloom. Course they are also taking
in the bulbs, azalea's and other spring flowers as well. Our peak bloom for
TB's is 1 week prior to Mother's Day weekend and one week after. Course their
are iris blooming before and after these times as well.

Also we have one bed just for reblooming iris. I am trying to add another
small bed for median rebloomers.

Betty you won't recognize the garden now because of all the changes that have
been taking place. They now have experimental vegetable gardens, a japanese
garden, a korean garden, plus many other additions.

Hope to see some of you this year!!! Jim Loveland, Fenton, MO Zone 5
