Years ago, I heard that the iris fans were toxic to people. The threat was
that the crystalline substance (I'm not a chemist so I never knew the name of
it) would cause the throat to swell causing a person to choke. I didn't let
small children around my irises as I divided and cleaned them for fear they
would bite into one.
I'd not heard they were toxic to cows, but the same idea might have started
this theory.
