OT: Iris Toxicity

Seems to me that rather than talk about what one may have heard, or
remembers hearing, from someone, somewhere at sometime, a simple web search
might provide the answer as to whether iris may be toxic to you, your
livestock, your children, and other critters. From the University of
California, Davis
(http://wellness.ucdavis.edu/safety_info/poison_prevention/take_care_with_pl
ants/toxicity_of_plants.html) comes this information:

They have a list at the above address, and if you go down to iris in the
list, you will find iris listed with these notes.

Minor toxicity: Ingestion may cause some minor symptoms such as rash,
vomiting or diarrhea. Ingestion of small amounts may not cause any symptoms
at all.

Dermatitis: Exposure to juice or sap from these plants or a puncture wound
from the thorns may produce a skin rash or irritation. Skin wounds from some
of these plants can be extremely painful causing large blisters and burning
of the skin.

So, it looks as if there may be some minor discomfort of some sort
associated with eating or ingesting iris, but it may take some doing to see
any results. Those of you who handle large numbers of iris, come
division/planting time, may be able to report on any symptom from the second
comment, especially if you often work without gloves. Those of you who may
have been serving iris in a salad or some other dish may accurately report
on the first <g>.
