I agree with this EXCEPT that some cultivars seem to be more vulnerable
to some kinds of stresses while others are more vulnerable to different
stresses (after which they rot).

For example, I've gotten the impression (might be totally wrong...) that
CELEBRATION SONG needs above average drainage (stressed by lack of
oxygen to the roots more than some cultivars?), LADY FRIEND is tolerant
to some freezing while growing actively, but not to severe freezes, and
many cultivars from the dry/low humidity (or at least consistent
moisture) summer areas, are highly stressed by wide variations in summer
rain (many of the Blyth and California cultivars). So if several
different folks/locations/climates east of the Mississippi report rot in
a particular cultivar, and nobody farther west has problems, I'd say
that some generalizations can be made (i.e., that cultivar can't
tolerate variable and/or large amounts of summer rain/humidity combined
with heat).

We really need regional test gardens or at least
coordination/publication of garden growing results for different
regions. Looking forward to the day when the results of the AIS
popularity poll is online by regions as a start. We would still have
huge variation from one year to the next in some regions (like here
where rainfall has ranged from <30 inches to >60 inches, and winter lows
have ranged from minus 25oF to about 10oF, and snow cover has ranged
from none all winter to a blizzard 3 ft deep in March in the 30 yrs I've
been gardening here), but at least it would give some ideas of what does
reasonably well at least some years.
