I'm looking at my garden, where all my iris have been slowly decreasing in
foliage during "winter dormancy", which I realize doesn't mean quite the
same thing out here in California. Very little rain this winter. The only
things reblooming are 3 or 4 Byers things and Weiler's little SDB Plum Wine.
I bought or received as extras about 50 new iris this year. As I look in
the new bed, I see a few vigorous little clumps forming. The largest of
these are mostly Sutton intros: Abiding Joy, Innocent Star, Bye Bye Blues,
Different Design and Firebeard (which bloomed already, late last year). The
only others showing the same fast growth are Ghio's new Bursting Bubbles and
Ernst's older Afternoon Delight. Of course, one of my seedlings was planted
in the same bed. In the same period of time with the same conditions it
went from an pecan-sized rhizome with two increase nubbins to eight
full-sized rhizomes. It grows even better than its parent Reincarnation;
now I only hope it looks as uniquely lovely as its other parent Crystal
Dreams. It was the only seed to germinate from that cross.
Busy clearing a space and moving sprinklers around for a new patch of
louisianas, which will start with a couple of Heather Pryor's delights from
a Blyth order which should arrive very soon. Bought some sweet peas,
rannunculus, gladiolus, paperwhite narcissus, dahlias, and various lavenders
on Sunday.
