I. pumila

Hi Laetitia,

Yes, Iris pumila is a species that needs a cold period in order to bloom
well. It is native to the mountains of eastern Europe into the Ural
Mountains of Russia and is found in upland meadows as well as on cliffsides.
It likes to have water from melting snow run through it before bloom time and
then dry out during the summer. Standard Dwarf Bearded Irises (SDBs) are
almost always derived from crossing of I. pumila with Tall Bearded (TB)
irises. Some SDBs exhibit more characteristics of the pumila ancestors,
while others exhibit more TB traits. Therefore, gardeners will have better
success with SDB varieties that are already being grown by others in their
climate.
