Walter,

You will have to refer back to the 1939 Checklist for the interpretation of
the special symbols and typefaces used in the entries, as these are not
fully explained in the 1949 Checklist.

> oVENUS. (Sal.) ; etc.

The circle preceding the name of the iris (which is solid black in the
original) means "variety nearly obsolete" ('39CL, p.17)
>
> Venus. RC-S5L (Van T. 1915); Grey, Hardy Bulbs 1:282. 1938 (KOROLKOWI
> VIOLACEA X iberica).

The name printed with only the first letter capitalized means that it is a
"duplicate, unapproved and (or) uncertain name" ('39CL, p. 17)
>
> Venus Demilo. Le Gron 1940; VENUS DE MILO

The name printed in lower case except for the first letter of each word and
in boldface type (as this one is in the original) means that it is a
synonym (usually just a typo from a catalog) for the name that appears in
all caps at the end of the entry ('39 CL, p. 17)
>
> VERIBLUE. Etc., [ ] (Really a box).

The "Etc." means this is updated or corrected information from a previous
CL entry (in this case, the initial entry for VERIBLUE appears on p. 553 of
the '39 CL); the box means that this iris is "scented" ('39 CL, p. 17)
>
> VERIS . DB-E-ReY4D (Callis N.); R., 1941 (Neon x Sound Money)

This is the initial registration information for an iris that was not
recorded as being introduced through 1949, as indicated by the "N."
following the hybridizer's name inside the parentheses ('39 CL, p.52)
>
> VERNAL DAWN. Ver-R7L (Henry- 1941-Coll. Bath Co., Va.); Fair 1941; (form
of I.
> verna): [ ].

This indicates the introduction of the iris named in 1941; the "Fair 1941"
indicates this iris was listed in the Fairmount Iris Gardens 1941 catalog
>
> VERNAL DAWN. Ver-R7L (Henry-1941-Coll. Bath Co., Va.); Fair 1941;
> R. 1941; etc.

This is an update to the previous entry. The update is "R. 1941" indicating
this iris was registered by the AIS in 1941.

book).

You are correct that these two irises are listed as being introduced, i.e.,
they have dates in the same parentheses as the originator's name), and that
none of the others can be confirmed as having been introduced from the
information provided here or in the '39 CL, although the first Venus was
presumably in commerce at some time.
