I think you may be on to something with the genetic perspective.  I 
suffer from apparently inherited conditions from each of my 
grandfathers.  My maternal grandfather was an avid gardener and my 
paternal grandfather was a horseman.  (They tell me that my first 
word was horse.)  My main bed of Irises is planted in the far back 
end of a pasture I converted for gardening.

My neighbors actually stop to comment that I'm crazy when they see me 
cutting sod again to open yet another bed.  One of them halfway 
teasingly calls to me "no more flowers" whenever he sees me with the 
shovel.  I only plan to enlarge an existing bed this summer.  You 
know, I need more room to plant rebloomers.
