Tom Burseen has gotten some really wild and beautiful irises by making wide crosses. Of course he has a couple of acres to work with, a lot more room than most of us.   I just got his new catalogue.

   I am not so sure of what a 'wide cross' is.  I had the same notion  
as expressed by Betty, but after joining the group back in the Dark  
Ages, I found out that all crosses outside of a 'line' were 'wide  
crosses.'  So, the obvious plic x self could be 'wide,' but when you  
trace the cross back you could find common ancestors on both  
sides of the parentage, meaning your are still in the 'line.'  The 'line'  
came to mean common ancestors on both sides and/or crossing  
the siblings with each other, selfing, or crossing seedlings back to  
the parents.

Using the key words of 'wide cross,' you can find this discussion in  
the Mallorn Archives.

Back to Betty's question.  Yes and no on both.  If you grow  
thousands of 'wide cross' seedlings, you'll increase the likelihood of  
getting something nice (like GREEN AND GIFTED, maybe), but  
who has the space and time?

Now, a contradiction.  Cheating Heart X Tennessee Woman has  
produced a beautiful rimmed bi-color with minimal 'Wench type'  
haft markings.  The parents are two plics and only four seeds  
germinated!  Go figger.
