A couple of years ago I asked on iris-talk about how to plug the PVC
pipe to prevent leaking. Several responded with ideas, and one gentleman
(I didn't look back to find his name... and thank him for the excellent
info) told me about a product called "GREAT STUFF". Yes, it is great
stuff, it is readily found in hardware stores. It comes in a
pressurized can,
and one can do a whole lot. Building contractors use the stuff to fill
all
sorts of cracks in walls, foundations, etc. You squeeze/spray, it
expands, and hardens in several hours, over night for sure. Our club
completely
re-did our PVC vases using Great Stuff. When it expands and dries, we
took an exacto knife and cut the end of the tube flat, leaving the plug
inside.
Just be careful that you don't put so much in you fill up too much of the
tube! It's like filling with a foam that hardens... lightweight. We
had
perhaps 300 vases to fill, so I initially purchase 20 cans... but it
turned
out we only needed about 3-4 cans, it goes a long way. I think I paid
about $3.00 per can, very reasonable.
When we purchased new PVC, there was black writing on one side. To
remove, we tried hardware quality stain removers, but found in the end
run,
using an electic hand held sander, which just lightly sanded off the
writing, worked just as well. If the pipes age and turn a bit yellow, I
would just try sanding again. I sanded after the pipes were cut, and
after
the Great Stuff was dry and the ends cut, so that I could sand the ends.
This all takes a bit of work, but that is what committees are for.
I have to tell you this funny story. When I still had the extra cans
of Great Stuff, my building contractor came by to work on my room
addition,
and saw the cans. A day or so later, he asked me what holes was I
filling
in the house? He said he couldn't imagine me having so many holes in my
house, what could have gone wrong and what in the heck was I doing? I
could tell he thought I was crazy. I then explained my project, and he
laughed.
He honestly thought I was up to no good. He ended up using one of my
spare cans to fill a hole he had to put in the foundation... again a
little
  goes a long way.
