Unaware, I have been growing and flowering I. douglasiana in Virginia for
the past 2 years. Some of you will recall my enthusiastic reports of
flowering I. lazica last year. The plant came from Arrowhead Alpines, which
in turn had grown it from ARGS seed. Examination of photos of the blooms
showed that this could not have been Iris lazica, but was indeed Iris
douglasiana. All previous attempts to grow this species here from properly
labelled plants ordered from PNW sources had failed.
Now I have a small clump and would guess I will get 3-5 bloomstalks this
spring. The species is growing in light shade, in organic soil formerly
occupied by an old elm stump and with very good drainage. Our recent mild
winters are much to its liking.
Seems like we dodged a bullet last night--the predicted low of 15 was not
realized; my thermometer registered 23 at 5:30 AM. Warm weather had drawn
up plants to some degree, but the extreme dryness (-2.3 inches since
January, and we finished 2001 nearly a foot down in rainfall) has kept them
from being in as full growth as might have been the case--in which a night
like last night could have been disastrous!
