Here goes Charlie, hope you can use it.
THE QUEEN AND KING OF REBLOOM
Janet Natale, zone 8, Myrtle Beach, SC
Once upon a time, in my garden which has been relocated twice in the
last
two years, an iris rebloomed faithfully while another tried...faithfully.
SKY QUEEN,
(Craig, 1962) ruled the rebloomers both potted and in the ground. She was
described as a campanula self, but to me more a sky blue with a violet
influence and
though her zone span of rebloom was 5 through 9, my state of South Carolina
was not listed in the rebloom recorder. And she is rarely listed in
catalogs. So with great joy I witnessed her bloom and rebloom with two
stalks to the small clump I had. Nearby was the small clump of GLACIER
KING(Carson, 1985) which had the same zones reporting rebloom but again my
state was not one of those mentioned. His story was one of courage and
fortitude but alas, not exactly REBLOOM. His sping bloom was superb, a
tailored glacial blue self with yellow beard, but the rebloom stalks that
gallantly formed each at the end of December consistently fell to our very
late freezes of January. In hopes that he can manage to rebloom better
I've planned yet another move to the most sun drenched location I can provide
in my yard...er, kingdom. Who knows? Perhaps next year the King will
topple SKY QUEEN from her throne! Meanwhile, the court of rebloomers
here has other smaller but faithful subjects:
DARKLING and DARK CRYSTAL must be among the few sdb's that don't mind our
heat, humidity and lack of steady frost because they rebloomed nicely this
past year
and the year before. Long live rebloom!
