Linda,
"Full purple" on FOREIGN STATESMAN I'm sure was intented to refer to the
color. It is quite a rich color but definitely not "black." The substance is
also very good. The form is also quite adequately described as "full,"
however.
Last year it produced pollen on a frost damaged stalk that had only two
blooms. The plant was a one-year start I had gotten from Malevil Gardens (Dana
Brown).
The haft width is impressive. You might also note Innerst's CONCISE, well
down in price. It is from SILVERADO and FOREIGN STATESMAN. The latter, by
the way, has reblooming ancestry with TWICE DELIGHTFUL as its pollen parent.
There is a picture of Concise in Mid-America's on-line catalog. I can send
you off-line a picture of FS if you would like to see it. It isn't one I took
myself, so I don't feel free to post it to Iris-photos without permission.
Another one along this line, somewhat lighter or brigher in color than FS is
Merle Robert's SHOPTALK which I like it very much. It also is quite wide and
does set a pod quite readlily, I've found. It also is from a Schreiner dark
(DARKSIDE) and WIDE HIPS, half-sibling to Silverado. There's some interesting
possibilities in line breeding here considering the interrelationships among
these.
