The wimps are long gone.
Here are two historic (by definition) weeds I have had from almost
the beginning of their existence. They will always have places in
the garden as long as I am able to dig and replant them.
CHERRY JUBILEE, V. Wood, White self; red-tangerine beard.
'69. This grows sightly below the weed category but moderately
well, at least enough to make a sensible clump that can stay put for
three years without dividing. This iris blooms every year, no matter
what, and has a stately presence to it. It has never given me an
ounce of trouble in any area. Leaf spot, bloom-out, rot - it never
has any of these problems.
SUDDEN SPRING, Framke. '65. Just about everything in the
Checklist description doesn't apply to this iris as it grows here.
The Checklist has the color of the standards and falls reversed, and
the falls are definitely not violet, more of a cerise red, with little
purple or violet. The stds. are light yellow. The bloom season is
listed as MVL. For me in TX and in MS, it has been EM to M.
Whatever, this is a rampant grower and always draws a crowd with
its bold splash of color. It grows so fast and blooms so much it
doesn't have time to think about rotting.
Walter Moores
Enid Lake, MS USA 7/8 (Early daff buds are showing color).
