Christian,
Chasing down pedigrees is part of the great fun of wintertime Iris growing.
I'm glad to see you have been bitten by the bug..
Some tools you may wish to acquire are the *Iris Check Lists* which are the
10-year compilations of *Registrations & Introductions* published in January
of each year. All these are available from the AIS Storefront, a link for
which is on the AIS homepage: http://www.irises.org/
Concerning *Silverado* the registered pedigree is: (Schreiner K 440-5:
Starina x Navy Strut) X Carriage Trade. Starina is from Dream Time (rchid) X
Skywatch (blue). Navy Strut includes seedlings from Schreiner black breeding
and *Sterling Silver* (a grandparent) whcih is from (Br. Charles {Rekamp[
54-14: sib to Celestial Snow) X Dr. Wanlass. Dr. Wanlass, in turn is from
Chantilly (laced orchid and light yellow blend) X Chivalry (blue).
*Sterling Silver*, incidentally, was a pivotal breeder from Steve Moldovan
that brought factors for ruffling and lace as well as many other good
qualities into lines by Schreiners and others.
Much could be said also about the *Carriage Trade* side of the pedigree. This
is from several generations of whites with light blues in the background, all
top quality materials.
You can see this complete pedigree as a chart of you go to the HIPS
(Historical Iris Preservation Society) web page,
http://www.worldiris.com/public_html/level1/TOC.html#anchor741010
and click on "Quick Fix" in the upper right, then scroll down to *Silverado*
then click on "Pedigree".
A bit of trivia--the mama of *Silverado* # K 440-5 has a sister seedling # K
440-8, registered as *Stormy Night.* It is the grandmother of *Skylark's
Song.*
See what fun this is? You *must* get the books.
In the meantime, you might enjoy signing up with J. I. Jones for the on-line
database. Here's a link to follow: http://www.irisregister.com/ but you
need to contact Jones for a password to use this well. An address for him is
jijones@usjoneses.com .
A further word about Silverado--with several strong outcrosses involved in
succession in its ancestry, the genetic makeup of Silverado is an especially
rich pool of good things. That's one reason so many very good things have
come from it. What it does *not* have is a tendency to rebloom, and appears
to surpress a rebloom tendency quite strongly in its immediate offspring.
There are grandchildren which do rebloom, however.
It also has some very wide-hafted offspring, including *Concise* and *Thunder
Quay.*
