Re: Plicatas - Yellow

Colleen -- To answer your question as to whether or not Beverly Sills
carries the plicata gene: the answer is yes. So does Vanity, Pink
Taffeta, and probably a surprising number of pinks if we were to make
test crosses to check.

Hall's famous flamingo-pink line was based in large part on Sass
material, and much of what the Sasses did involved plicatas at some
point or another, so genes were carried along.... In the 1950's, Hall
numbered and saved several tangerine-bearded plicatas, but decided they
were not good enough to introduce. Rudolph also had one which he was
contemplating naming, but fortunately he did not (I saw it...it was not
that good).

There are three things to consider when contemplating how pervasive the
plicata gene can be in pinks, yet how little we see of it::
  (a) plicata is recessive, so will be expressed only in full dosage
(three doses may give "hints", but they're not plicatas)
  (b) the dominant white inhibitor ("I") in pinks would drastically
tone down any plicata markings which might occur, making it harder to
spot them, and
  (c) if the plicata markings were confined to the haft area, they
could well be indistinguishable from plain run-of-the-mill haft marks on
non-plicatas.
