Re: Re: TB, "I" gene

Fred,

Your understanding of the behavior of the two distinct inhibitors--the "I" and
the Progenitor-derived inhibitor with which you have worked so extensively and
with phenomenally good results is in agreement with the understanding I had
also had. Thank you for posting. The results you cite confirm what has been
published about dosage effects with the latter.

My own very limited experience with the Progenitor-derived factor has puzzled
me somewhat when it comes to varieties apparently rich in aphylla ancestry.
The cross of Swingtown X Romantic Evening produced *no* strong bicolors--in a
rather small population of 12 seedlings. Half, however, were bitones to
greater or lesser degree. I have no doubt about the Romantic Evening
parentage, however, because of a number of other characteristics displayed in
the cross. There are quite a number of Romantic Evening offspring with
bicolor expressions similar to what I observed here.

A cross of a bitone which has no published Progenitor ancestry X Romantic
Evening produced only one self in eleven seedlings. All the remainder were
strong bitones or outright amoenas. I had suspected the bitone parent of
having the factor because of its appearance, and believe the published
parentage is in error. It appears to be a single-dose carrier.

It looks like there are TB pigments that the factor does not affect nearly as
much --if at all-- as it does the normal violanin of TB's. I am mindful of
*Kevin's Theme* for example, in addition to the Swingtown cross.

As to dosage effects of the "I" factor, I remember many years ago speculation
circulating that the "I" factor *cannot* build up to high multiple doses
because of a lethal effect when it does so. I recall someone publishing
something about *Pinnacle* suggesting it had three doses, but it was an
extraordinary exception. All the "I" whites other than *Pinnacle* seemed to
breed at least some colored offspring. I have read nothing like this in
recent years and am wondering if that information was in error. The opinion
in those days was that "I" factor does not, or cannot ordinarily, accumulate
beyond the duplex level.

Does any of this agree with your subtantial experience?
