Re: OT: New Hybrid

Hi Ann,

( This is Margaret) We have been gone for two-plus weeks, so just now
reading my email.

Congatulations! If I remember my conversion tables, he was not only a good
weight, but also a goodly length, well over 20 inches. That's wonderful
that he is healthy.

My father was a plastic surgeon; in fact, the last I knew, the surgery used
to repair either the hare lip, as we call it, or the cleft palate was
devised by him--can't remember which. You are correct that early surgery is
called for. As I remember, if the cleft palate isn't repaired before the
child starts to speak, he will always have a typical "lisp". I remember as
a child meeting a woman whose surgery had been done by my father, but when
she was an adult, and even though there was no longer escape of air upwards
through the palate, she still was extremely difficult to understand.

Mid-line congenital anomalies are fairly common. Fortunately most are
easily fixed. Where will you be going for the surgery? Do do some research
on surgeons: you want the best and most experienced one you can find.
Doesn't hurt to have a consultation with more than one, either.

Good luck! Let me know how everything progresses.

Margaret
