Hi, Christy,
I got that catalog, too, and had a chuckle and snicker (boy, that sounds funny when you do both at once ;-) ) at the iris section. I guess you have to laugh to keep from crying. It is a shame that people prey on the ignorance of others. You know, I bet they make a lot of money that way, too, selling to folks who don't know any better. You have to believe that someone in the organization knows better, even if the person who writes the catalog come-ons doesn't.

Hi Everyone, The new Dutch Gardens catalog arrived yesterday. While it's a good source for inexpensive bulbs it's the perfect example of why to buy irises only from people who specialize in irises. In case you didn't get the catalog, they're also online (http://www.dutchgardens.com/). Just type "iris" into the search engine. Their beautiful photo of the "Dalmation" iris looks suspiciously like I. laevigata variegata. The species name is shown as I. pallida "Aurea" variegata. Good price if it really is laevigata but average to high if it turns out to be pallida. A good choice if you like gambling since I. pallida var dalmatica and I. pallida "Aurea" variegata should be different irises. :-) Those who love Siberians will be happy to know that "at last - there's a pink hued selection!". DANCE BALLERINA DANCE (1983) is registered as having ruffled pinkish-lavender falls and near white standards. I have no idea what Siberian they used for the photo. BTW, DBD can be found for as little as $3.00. :-) For those who collect Japanese irises, you'll be happy to know that a "New & Exclusive" collection is available. DACE (1980), PINK FROST (1959), PINSTRIPE (1959), and DRAMATIC MOMENT (1989) have finally increased enough to offer to the public! You'll be delighted to know that "The best, brightest yellow" Japanese iris is also available in this collection. You *will* be required to overlook the fact that JUBILANT SPIRIT was introduced in 1989 and the photo clearly shows a yellow Louisiana iris. :-) If you really want to know what you're buying and that you're paying a fair price, order from people who specialize in irises. The American Iris Society homepage lists a number of nurseries and more are listed on our "Links" page.
